There is no single 2027 reading challenge. There are several, and they are different kinds of thing. One hands you 52 categories and a year. One gives you a title word each month. One is a long themed list with a bonus round. One is meant to drag you off your usual shelf. Choosing between them is mostly a question of how much structure you like, and whether you want other people involved.
Here is how the main ones work, what is published for 2027 so far, and how to choose. We are not connected to any of them. Ours is on the list too, so read that part knowing it.
Which 2027 lists are out
Short answer: on 7 November 2026 we could not find a published 2027 list for any of the big four. What each has done in the past is the best guide to when.
| Challenge | What we found |
|---|---|
| The 52 Book Club | Its FAQ says next year's challenge is usually released sometime in November, and the exact date is always a surprise. Voting on four new prompts for 2027 ran in September. |
| Buzzword | The 2026 list was announced in mid-December 2025. |
| Popsugar | The 2026 list was out by December 2025. |
| Read Harder (Book Riot) | Book Riot's piece on the 2026 tasks is dated 12 January 2026. We could not confirm the release date itself. |
These are patterns, not promises. Check the source before you print or buy anything with a year on it.
How they differ
Five challenges, in plain terms. The facts come from each challenge's own pages and from Book Riot and Lit Hub, listed at the end. The “good if” lines are our opinion.
The 52 Book Club
52 categories · all year
Fifty-two prompts for the calendar year, which Lit Hub describes as vague and scavenger-hunt-like. The club votes on four new ones every September. You read at your own pace: any book finished within the year counts, audiobooks included, and the FAQ says doubling up on prompts is fine if 52 books is out of reach. There is a Goodreads group with more than 28,000 members and a StoryGraph challenge.
Good if you want a long list and a crowd to compare notes with.Less good if you want something short.
Buzzword
12 title themes + 12 cover themes · one a month
Run by booksandlala. Every month has a word or pattern the title must contain, with an optional cover challenge alongside. The 2026 list asked for “before” and “after” in January, keyboard keys in February, ordinal numbers in April, occupations in July and superlatives in December. One book a month is the whole commitment.
Good if you want a light, playful year.Less good if you like to pick by mood, since the title word narrows the shelf.
Popsugar Reading Challenge
40 standard + 10 advanced
The long themed list. The 2026 edition was garden themed and billed as a virtual book club. Book Riot notes the prompts run from broad, like “a book you meant to read in 2025,” to very specific: one asked for a character who does Pilates. There is a large Goodreads group, with more than 43,000 members.
Good if you like variety and a bonus round.Less good if oddly specific prompts will send you hunting for a book instead of reading one.
Read Harder (Book Riot)
About two dozen tasks · twelfth year in 2026
A set of tasks meant to push you out of your comfort zone and toward genres and writers you might skip. Sources give the 2026 count as 24 and as 26, so we say about two dozen. Check its rules on whether one book can count for more than one task.
Good if you want your reading stretched.Less good if you want to read only what you feel like.
Ours: the 2027 Reading Challenge
52 prompts · one a week, or 26, or 12
Fifty-two prompts, none of which tells you what to read. The whole list is free on one page, with no sign-up. You pick how many to do. There is no group, no forum and no prize: it is a list and a way to count.
Good if you want a plain list to use on your own.Less good if you want a community around it.
Pick by how you read
- The smallest commitment: Buzzword. Twelve books.
- Company: The 52 Book Club or Popsugar. Both have big Goodreads groups.
- To read outside your habits: Read Harder.
- One plain list, no group: ours.
- Your own number: any of them. The 52 Book Club says outright that you can read at your own pace.
Whichever you pick, decide the pace first. Fifty-two books is about fifty minutes a day and twelve is about twelve. The sums are in how to read 52 books in a year.
Choose the pace before the list. Lists are easy to swap in March. Paces are not.
Running more than one
Nothing stops you running two at once, and a book can often count for both. Read the rules first. The 52 Book Club, for one, was designed around different books but says doubling up is fine if you cannot reach 52.
A pairing that makes sense: one long list for variety and one small one for fun, say The 52 Book Club for the year and Buzzword for the monthly game. Twelve extra constraints, almost no extra reading.
Where to keep count
Goodreads and StoryGraph are trackers, not challenges, and both let you set a yearly goal. The 52 Book Club and Buzzword also keep challenge pages on StoryGraph. A notebook works as well as either. If you would rather have something to hold, ours is a printable:
We will update this page when the Popsugar and Buzzword 2027 lists appear, and the date at the top will change.

Questions
When does the Popsugar 2027 reading challenge come out?
We could not find a 2027 list on 7 November 2026. The 2026 list was out by December 2025, so early December is a reasonable guess. It is a guess, not an announcement.
Is there a Buzzword reading challenge for 2027?
Not announced that we could find on 7 November 2026. The 2026 list was posted in mid-December 2025, so expect the next one around then.

Its FAQ says the next year's challenge is usually released sometime in November, and that the exact date is always a surprise. We did not find it published on 7 November 2026.
Can I do more than one reading challenge at once?
Yes. Read each one's rules about a book counting twice. The 52 Book Club, for example, was designed around different books but says doubling up is fine if you cannot reach 52.

Do audiobooks count in reading challenges?
In The 52 Book Club, yes: its FAQ says all books are books and audiobooks are included. For the others, check their rules, or set your own.
