Which poster size?
11×14 in works on a shelf or next to a desk. 18×24 in is a good size above a desk, and it is the smallest we would pick for the Famous Equations poster because it has a lot of detail. 24×36 and 30×40 are for a big wall or a classroom. Frames are not included, but the sizes are standard, so a ready-made frame will fit.
What the equations are
- Euler's identity (eiπ + 1 = 0) puts e, i, π, 1 and 0 in one short equation. A lot of people call it the most beautiful equation in mathematics.
- Fourier series break a repeating signal into simple sine waves. MP3 and JPEG compression are based on this idea.
- The wave equation describes vibrations, like a guitar string or a drum. The bookmark shows its first few modes.
- The Dirac equation describes the electron, and it predicted antimatter a few years before the positron was found.
- The Navier–Stokes equations describe how liquids and gases move. Nobody has proved that they always have smooth solutions, and there is a one-million-dollar prize for it.
- The Mandelbrot set comes from repeating z → z² + c over and over. You can zoom into its edge forever.
