Four Christmas ornaments, each one a famous fractal: shapes that repeat themselves at smaller and smaller scales. • Koch snowflake (1904): a triangle gets a smaller triangle on the middle of every edge, again and again. Its edge grows without end, yet its area stays under 8/5 of the first triangle. Raised lines on the face show steps 0, 1 and 2. • Sierpinski triangle (1915), shaped as a little tree: take out the middle triangle, then repeat in the three that are left. • Pythagoras tree (1942): every square carries two smaller squares, and their areas always add up to the one below, a² + b² = c². • Pentaflake: a pentagon made of six pentagons, each made of six more, shrinking by the golden ratio.
